Learned what to feed mothers in Germany, and wanted a second child

When I heard from a friend, What can a nursing mother eat? In Germany, I sighed bitterly. I remembered the severe restrictions that I faced after childbirth and was sad. Of course, after the birth of a daughter, the feeling of joy helped to go through all the trials. But still someone else’s experience makes you think and nostalgic.

Today we can compare what young mothers are allowed to eat here and what they think about it in Germany. Finally, I'll share a recipe for broccoli cream soup, which is a great option for a summer lunch.

My neighbor Taisia moved to Germany 7 years ago. She met Friedrich at a conference dedicated to novelties for motorists. It took a long time to beg the rebellious Taisia to convince her to move to the groom’s homeland. She only gave up when she became pregnant. It is very difficult to live in two countries with a small child.

A week ago, Tya sent a text message: "2,900 Marcus, all in his father." Of course, after we left the hospital, we made Skype calls. Taisia looked very happy and satisfied. While we were talking, she was weaving vanilla pudding with berries. I was especially struck that the berries were clearly fresh, not boiled and not crushed into porridge.

Taia noticed my surprised look. She remembered well how after the birth of my daughter, I boiled all the fruits and vegetables for six months, until I decided to take an unthinkable risk and ate a piece of fresh cucumber. “Oh, I see you're discouraged. Yes, the rules in Germany regarding the nutrition of women in labor are not as strict as ours. Fruits and berries can be safely eaten, the main thing is not to overdo it with quantity.”

Then she told me that even in the hospital on the first day after the long-awaited meeting with the baby, she was offered a cup of coffee. And to the coffee put cookies with different types of smears - butter, cream cheese and curd mass with greens. Not breakfast is a dream.

What can be eaten by a nursing mother in our maternity hospitals I remember scanty plates with grayish porridge, probably oatmeal, which was delivered by a good nurse. The look was not the most appetizing, and the taste too. When I was at home with the baby, I tried to dilute the matter with bananas. In the ward, with a similar attempt, a breastfeeding consultant looked at me so menacingly that I put a branch of bright fragrant fruits away, and then completely demolished the floor below - in the department of mothers who have not yet given birth.

The limit of my food fantasies for a long time was an ordinary green fresh salad, seasoned with oil and fragrant herbs. It was terrible to break the rules set by a cloud of books and experienced relatives. But in early September, I snapped (my daughter is April) and ate a whole leaf of lettuce. The most interesting thing is that nothing happened. No tummy problems, nothing like that. I suspect you could have had fresh vegetables before.

Taisia's regular menu also revealed that she had the opportunity to choose which soup she would rather eat for lunch. Here you and meatballs, and chicken light broth, and seasonal cream soup. Often boiled meat and vegetables were also served to the dining table. As explained by the friend, almost everything is allowed, but each time reminds of reasonable amounts.

Of course, there are some prohibitions that are consonant with ours: any hot drinks or too spicy food. This is all waiting for the time when the baby confidently masters independent nutrition.

At the beginning of the article, I promised a recipe for broccoli cream soup. And now I'll tell you. Taya plans to skip the roasting stage and cook a similar one for Marcus when it's time to inject complementarys. What do you think of this idea? Write in the comments, I will tell my friend.

Broccoli cream soup

The ingredients
  • 1 knot of broccoli
  • 1 bundle of spinach
  • 1 head of onion
  • 2-3 potatoes
  • 0.25 celery root
  • 150 ml cream of 20% fat content
  • salt
  • pepper
  • vegetable oil (for roasting)

Preparation
  1. Spinach, potatoes, celery root and broccoli are thoroughly washed. Take the cabbage apart for inflorescences.
  2. Onions and celery root cut in cubes. Roast them in vegetable oil in a pan until transparent.
  3. Peeled potatoes cut either thin slices or cubes - as you like. We grind it so it can cook faster.

  4. Add roasted onions and celery and pour 700ml of water. A little salt. Let it boil. Meanwhile, cut the spinach.
  5. When the potatoes are cooked, add broccoli and cook for 5 minutes. Then put the spinach in a pan and bring it to a boil. Wait 2 minutes, no more, otherwise broccoli will be digested, and the soup will turn swamp green.
  6. Purify the soup with a blender. Heat the cream, add it to your next dinner, and go blender again.
  7. Return the soup to the stove, warm up without boiling, taste it, you may have to add salt and pepper. Bon appetit!
