Why did my mother-in-law give gifts on March 8 to everyone but my daughter-in-law?
For three years now, on March 8, I celebrate with my husband’s relatives. This is because it is on this date that the mother-in-law’s birthday falls. And she just loves to have a big party.
Last year I turned down the invitation for the first time because my sister called my daughter to the christening.
The mother-in-law treated with understanding, because such an event should not be missed, the reader Miroslava shares her story.
As it turned out, after the christenings themselves, the sister with her husband and niece were going to go to the parents of her brother-in-law, since they did not have the opportunity to come to the baptism ceremony. So by lunchtime, I was free to go and congratulate my mother-in-law. Which I did when I bought her a present.
I came in the middle of a celebration. My mother-in-law was very surprised at my arrival, but gladly accepted the present and sat me at the table with the rest of the guests, issuing a spare set of cutlery.
By the evening, when everyone was about to leave, the mother-in-law asked for a moment of attention and began handing out gifts to her daughter and friends with the words: “Although today is my birthday, but this year I decided to congratulate you on our common women’s holiday and thank you for being always with me.”
It was a shame to be the only one present. Of course I didn't look like that day. But for the next week after this incident, I could not let go of the situation. On her next visit, she asked her mother-in-law why she did this. She replied that she did not expect me to come, so she did not prepare a gift.
Although I pretended to be satisfied with her answer, there was still resentment in my soul. In the end, the gift could be passed through the husband. I still remember this situation with anger... I don't know if I'm going to congratulate my mother-in-law this year. In truth, there is no desire...
It seems to me that both the mother-in-law and the daughter-in-law made mistakes that led to a veiled conflict. The daughter-in-law could ask her sister in advance how long the christenings would take and not reject the invitation of her mother-in-law. I would have prepared a gift for her as well. Or the mother-in-law could just quietly distribute gifts to those for whom they purchased, so as not to offend the daughter-in-law.
So, in my opinion, there is neither right nor wrong in this situation. Do you think you should be offended by your mother-in-law for such an act?
