Nikola Motor refuses batteries in favor of hydrogen

The concept electropure Nikola One, presented by startup this year, created a furor. The company collected about 7000 pre-orders for more than $2 billion and promised to present a working prototype in December of this year. But suddenly Nikola Motor changed plans — instead of batteries, amps on natural gas trucks will use hydrogen fuel cells. On new plans the company announced in a press release that was published by Electrek. As noted in Nikola Motor, electropure that will come to market in the U.S. and Canada will be equipped with a hydrogen-electric fuel cell of 800 Volts, are made specifically for the company.

Earlier, the start-up representatives reported that the electric trucks will be equipped with a battery capacity of 320 kWh & natural gas. At the same time in Nikola stressed Motor — trucks will have zero emissions and can be considered fully environmentally friendly. As noted by Electrek, this statement is contrary to fact, as the use of natural gas is 100% eco-friendly. The transition to hydrogen fuel cells will allow a startup to release a product that can comply with the new standards protection Agency U.S. environmental protection Agency (EPA).

It should be noted that the average vehicle battery is three times more efficient than hydrogen cars. The lack of a new vision truck its creators is also the lack of infrastructure for refueling hydrogen fuel.

To solve this problem, the company will manufacture hydrogen on a special solar farms with zero emissions. Each farm will have a capacity of 100 megawatts, and hydrogen production will use the method of electrolysis. Hydrogen can also be applied in the production halls of the company when building machines. Nikola Motor promises to build 50 stations produce hydrogen by 2020.

In a press release Nikola Motor also marked advantages developed by company trucks. Electropure class 8 hydrogen fuel will differ more power than modern diesel trucks, and reserve Nikola One will be 1930 km.

In addition, the company announced that the model truck with power natural gas will be available outside North America in countries where it is difficult to access the hydrogen. However, the method of electrolysis, in which hydrogen is produced from water, can be used anywhere in the world. published
