This profession emerged in Italy, as are espresso coffee makers.


In the 80-ies of XX century it gained popularity in the United States through the famous owner of Starbucks Howard Schultz, who, having been in Italy, was inspired by the work of the local Barista. Gradually, the profession spread throughout the United States and Europe. If in the West, people in this profession – mostly men over the age of 30 years, we have a mainly young women.


A true Barista should know about coffee everything. He must understand how to mix coffee, know coffees and their properties, the distinctive features of taste and aroma and how different varieties of coffee are combined with each other. The Barista needs to feel subtle nuances of taste of coffee as a sommelier is to feel the wine. Barista must be able to cook at least forty kinds of coffee, and master the art of drawing on the coffee foam, the so-called latte art. The Barista must adjust the machine: the degree of grinding coffee, the water temperature, pressure, amount of water and time of preparation of the drink.
