Excess calcium increases mortality among women

According to the results of research published in the British Journal of Medicine, consumption of large amounts of calcium (more than one gram per day) women can increase the risk of death from many diseases, including cardiovascular disease. The calcium can enter the body like food and drugs and various food supplements.

Calcium is the primary mineral component of bone, calcium ions participate in blood clotting, also without it it is impossible to conduct impulses along nerve fibers and normally contract the muscles, including the heart.

In the experiments of Swedish researchers participated 62 441 the woman who were born in the period from 1914 to 1950. On average, they studied for 19 years. In 1987, 1990 and 1997, they filled out questionnaires on the quantities consumed calcium. So scientists found a link between high doses of calcium and increase the risk of death.

It turned out the highest mortality rate among women who took more than 1,500 mg of calcium per day.

Also high mortality rates recorded among women who took less than 500 mg of calcium per day. Professor Karl Mikaelsson explains this result by the fact that increased and decreased the amount of calcium in the body disrupts the regulation of exchange.

A similar study conducted by scientists from the National Institute of health, USA among men. After the work of researchers from United States revealed that long-term use of high doses of calcium increases the risk of death from cardiovascular disease in men (intake of calcium was more than a gram a day).
