Want a thousand — million ask
In psychology, it has long been known manipulative method of so-called "anchoring" – the introduction of hidden installation, changing subsequent behavior.
The unexpected use of this technique, suggested Todd Thorsteinson from the University of Idaho (USA). In his experiment, he asked subjects to imagine themselves as employers who are applicants for employment talks about the future salary. They were asked to evaluate a summary of the applicant and assign him an appropriate salary. Pre-written resume should contain the wishes of the applicant about future earnings – sometimes realistic, sometimes unthinkable, for example, a million dollars.
However, such high amount is called with a fair amount of irony in the joke. It would seem that such a lax approach reduces the chances of a decent income, and indeed in getting a job. However, it turned out: in cases too, but ironically inflated claims "employers" was assigned a salary higher than for the same summary, but with modest requests. The "anchor" in the form of very large amounts of inadvertently raised the bar in the calculations.
Thorsteinson, however, refrained from direct recommendations for job seekers, stressing that in such a situation, the humor is not always appropriate. But if you decided to make a joke about desired earnings, the amount is much better to overstate than to understate: asked for one dollar unlikely to assign high salary – the "anchor" could work in the opposite direction.
