The Ukrainian song “Chervona Kalina” became the personification of the unity of Ukrainians in the face of Russian aggression. Today, the anthem of the Sich Streltsy is known throughout the planet. It is performed by ordinary people and world stars in different languages. Therefore, we decided to trace how the patriotic motif of folk songs linked together the traditions of Ukrainian freedom fighters of the XVII, XX and XXI centuries.

However, this does not diminish the role of Stepan Nikolaevich in the creation of the future anthem. One of them was the poet Gregory Trukh. Inspired by Czarnetsky’s song, he added verses about “liberation from Moscow’s shackles.” So, as a result of collective creativity, the song acquired its modern appearance and became truly popular.
Later, the well-known teacher Ivan Bobersky wrote that “Oi at Luzi...” was very different from other sad songs. The image of the red kalina in it directly echoed Ukraine, which needs to be raised from the ashes and rebuilt. Therefore, in the perception of Ukrainians, the song became a call to unite and jointly defend their bright future.
It so happened that in the XXI century to liberate Ukraine from the Moscow invaders had the great-grandsons of the Sich streltsy. It is obvious that in these conditions the second birth of the patriotic anthem was only a matter of time. And accelerated it Ukrainian musician and leader of the group “Boombox” Andrey Khlyvnyuk.
With the outbreak of the war, Andrei took up arms to defend Kiev in the ranks of territorial defense. But he did not forget about the music and on February 26, patrolling Sophia Square, he sang the song “Oy at the Luzi chervona kalina” in front of his brothers. But that was just foreplay. Just a few days later, the baton was picked up by the leader of the band The Kiffness David Scott. The musician from South Africa added a musical substrate to the vocal part of Khlyvnyuk. As a result, the video track gained more than 9 million views on YouTube. Then more. In April, the legendary British rock band Pink Floyd broke their 28-year silence. The reason was a joint clip with Khlyvnyuk for the song “Oy at the loozy chervon kalina”. In just two days, the song "Hey, Hey, Rise Up!" reached the top of the world charts. Great news! Especially when you consider that the money collected from the release goes to help Ukraine.
“This song could be any rebel song that has the same roots as in this song,” says Andrey. According to the artist, a lot of factors came together so that his “reading” of the old song touched the souls of people. But looking back, we understand why it was Kalina that was destined to become a symbol of Ukrainian resistance. The fact is that today, as a hundred years ago, millions of people are again living with the hope of lifting their homes and rebuilding their Ukraine from the ashes. Together with them, we believe in the bright future of Ukraine and thank our ancestors for the cultural heritage that gives us strength in the struggle for freedom.
