What happens to a person who is captured?

My friend from Buchi knows firsthand, What is felt by people released from captivity. She was lucky because the Russian invaders quickly released her. She came home safe and sound. And then she was able to evacuate from a place that forever entered the history of not only Ukraine, but the whole world.

Peels But it's more of a lucky occasion. Hundreds of other people were much less fortunate. And they survived. stages of adaptation of the prisoner. What I’m going to talk about in today’s article is really scary. But while the war is going on in Ukraine, we need to talk about it and know it.

The psyche of even the most persistent person will fail if he is captured. For those who have never lived in wartime, it is difficult to imagine how people feel in such conditions. But today this topic is relevant for every Ukrainian, so we often talk about war.

Surprisingly, there are even specialist captive survival experts these days. They told how a person adapts to conditions of total stress.

When a person is captured by the invaders, In the first few minutes, they panic.. This is a normal reaction to an abnormal situation. Most people are captured suddenly and unexpectedly. This is a direct threat to their lives. Immediately there is a desire to run away, trembling on the body. And in the head the thoughts are confused with each other, the person cannot gather.

During stage 1 adaptation, it is important to give the body a chance to survive the shock. If the military who took you prisoner does not have a direct effect on you, let your physical reactions run wild. For example, do not try to drown out the tremors in the body.

The next step is to negation of reality, unbelief. There are thoughts that this cannot happen and very soon the prisoners will be saved. This lasts from the first minutes of captivity up to several hours. And here it is extremely important to give yourself the right installation. Captivity can last a very long time, and you need to be prepared for this. However, we cannot lose hope of salvation.

Your first priority is to manage stress in the first few hours. It depends on how much you have to survive. It is very important to praise yourself for small achievements. You can breathe, you can think, you have overcome tremors in your body and so on. All this must be recorded in the mind as steps towards liberation.

Resistance and compliance The next stage, which lasts from the first days to several weeks of captivity. You need to understand that each person will have a different behavior in such conditions. Someone will begin to resist any restrictions and coercion. Others will be more accommodating to the invaders.

Don’t ask too much of yourself and others. Your most important task is to survive.

If captivity lasts for several weeks or even months, people begin to fall into captivity. Depression and despair. This is a direct consequence of the loss of freedom, isolation and isolation from the outside world. Even the most persistent people feel apathy and passivity.

In such a situation, it is not always possible to find an external support. For example, enlist the support of another prisoner. Then you should ask for help from yourself. Find the inner meaning of living. If you can survive the captivity, no more difficulties in life will scare you.

Acceptance of prisoners is different, and in the worst cases it can last not only months, but even years. People adapt and get used to it. acceptance phase. You have at least minimal control over your life.

People who have spent too much time in captivity often master their fear. This leads to effective behavioral models. However, this can happen if a person can. Take control of your initial stress response. The first 45 minutes of captivity are considered the most dangerous, as both captives and captors are prone to impulsive reactions.

During captivity, each person’s body adapts in its own way. The type, intensity, and duration of stress reactions are all individual. Despite all the difficulties, it is important to remember and repeat to yourself: You're much stronger than you think.

I sincerely hope that this information will never be useful to you in practice. I believe that very soon the war in Ukraine will end and people will no longer fear for their lives. Take care of yourself and your loved ones!
