Swedish researchers believe that 80% of men could avoid a heart attack if they give up cigarettes, reduced the amount of alcohol, exercised and ate healthy food.
The best option for long male life scientists think that physical activity, a minimum of 40 minutes per day; moderate consumption of alcohol; waist circumference less than 37 inches; no tobacco; a diet of fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, low-fat dairy products, whole grains and fish.
To such conclusions experts at the Karolinska Institute came to after studying 20721 healthy men 45-79 years for 11 years. The study showed a clear reduction in the risk of heart attack for each individual factor of lifestyle. Men who combined a useful diet, moderate alcohol consumption, did not smoke, were physically active and had low amounts of abdominal fat, showed a reduced risk of 86 percent.
Professor Agneta Akesson: "It is not surprising that healthy lifestyle can reduce heart attacks. What is surprising is how drastically the risk dropped due to these factors." The scientist added that it is never too late to change behavior and lifestyle to reduce the risk, but it is better to start from an early age.
