The significant year 1961 in the USSR began with monetary reform. No sooner had the people adapted than in March an unexpected disaster happened in Babi Yar. It seemed to Soviet citizens that no more tragic or significant events were expected this year. But on April 12, the whole planet was stirred up by sensational news: Yuri Gagarin is in space!



On this day, Yuri Gagarin for the first time in the history of mankind made a safe flight into space and, once rounding the Earth, landed unharmed in the Volga region. At the same time, the Soviet cosmonaut became known and recognizable all over the world.

The young test pilot was not ready for such popularity, because he aspired to space not for the sake of fame: it was the embodiment of the cherished youth dream. The unshakable desire to rise to the sky was born in Yuri’s soul long before his studies in the aero club. And while studying at the aviation school, he proved excellent grades and high performance that he is able to achieve the intended goal.

Returning to his native country, Gagarin continued to work in his specialty and planned to fly into space again. But at the age of 34, a famous astronaut crashed while performing a test flight.
