Washing raw meat under running water over the sink is silly, a terrible mistake of housewives

The ancient Greek sage Solon believed that “all life should be learned”. He's not alone. We have also long been convinced of the correctness of this idea, because Solon’s maxim lives in folk wisdom. Live, learn. And yes, it turns out it's wrong that we wash chicken and other meats, fish under running water. Why not?

My chicken

The reason is that the surface of these products is covered with many micro-organisms, among which there are pathogens of quite unpleasant, even dangerous diseases. Many of their pathogens live in the ground (by the way, a gram of garden soil contains about a billion saprophyte bacteria, including carriers of incurable infections). And representatives of the animal world are actively in contact with it.

You gonna say creepy? But not all saprophytes are so insidious. They are even useful, as they process the organic remains of the plant and animal world, as a result of which the soil becomes fertile.

But it depends on how my chicken, beef, pork, fish, whether we protect ourselves from infection. Imagine washing chicken or other meat under a stream. Water splashes in all directions, getting on your clothes, the surface of the sink, kitchen furniture, nearby dishes and food products. Along with the droplets, thousands of invisible bacteria fly away.

Meanwhile, if there are dangerous ones among them, you can not destroy them by washing them. It is best not to wash the meat before cooking. The causative agents of infectious diseases die only at high temperature. Therefore, it is important to properly heat the poultry, meat, fish.

But how to free meat from small chips, fragments of bones? You can rinse the bird or meat in water by pouring it into a bowl. Then dry the washed pieces or carcass with paper towels. The bowl is thoroughly washed with soap, soda, other means for washing dishes. And kitchen surfaces are often wiped with disinfectants (the experience of the pandemic was also not in vain).

As for eggs, immediately after buying them, you do not need to wash them to preserve the natural protective film that protects the egg from getting bacteria inside and drying out. With this film, the egg remains fit for consumption longer. Please note that we only buy eggs with shells without a single crack.

After all, any damage to the shell is a wide open gate for harmful bacteria. But immediately before cooking scrambled eggs, omelets, boiled eggs, pastries from pastry dough, creams and drinks on egg basis, eggs should be washed necessarily and always.

It is best to arrange a bath for eggs as follows:
  1. for half an hour soak the eggs in soda solution (1 liter of water 1 tablespoon of soda);
  2. Then wash the eggs under running water. To do this, you need to allocate special dishes, mark it and not use it for anything else.

What is also very important is to maintain the cleanliness of kitchen items and areas that are more susceptible to pollution than others. In addition to sinks and working surfaces, these are also sponges and wipes for washing dishes. Wash them thoroughly and change them once a week.

Boards for butchering food are also problematic items. To minimize the risk of food poisoning, it is better to have at least four boards. The first will be used only for meat, the second for fish, the third will cut vegetables and fruits, and the fourth will be useful for cutting bread and pies.

We sincerely wish you safe, healthy and delicious food!
