Why Good People Suffer Often and Do Nothing

Good and bad qualities of a person are combined in different proportions. Today we will see if good people suffer more than bad people. Sadhguru enjoys sharing his wisdom.

We feel better when compared to others, we seem better. But how is it that we look better than others? It's very simple. We label others as “bad people.” The better we think we are, the worse we see everyone around us. Our entire self-esteem is based on this comparison.

Sadhguru takes in the wondrous views at Bryce Canyon National Park. This massive reserve in Southern Utah is famous for its hoodoo formations, giant monoliths of red stone that look vaguely human. According to the Paiute Indians, these hoodoos were once Legend People who were turned into stone as punishment by the Coyote spirit. You can still see their faces in the rock, and so the park is known as Angka-ku-wass-a-wits (red painted faces) in the Paiute language. #RideWithSadhguru #BryceCanyon

And of course, we don’t want to be around really good people so we don’t feel worse. Sadhguru says that our virtue does not free us from anything. “A good man has nothing here or there.” People are happy, but they have no idea of true joy. They are happy only because they have something that others do not have.

To be happy because others do not have it is not a good thing. And that's definitely not what defines a person.

Sadhguru in his lecture told a remarkable parable: “One saint lived his whole life extremely righteously.” He died without doing a single bad thing. In Paradise, the angels took up a list of his deeds and began to list them.

Among the actions of the saint there was not a single bad thing, and the angels were puzzled. They said that placement in paradise is determined by the number of bad deeds. One bad deed means the best accommodation with a view of the sea, two bad deeds – the next kind of accommodation. But for those who don't have a single bad thing on the list, we don't have any kind of placement.

The man got upset. He tried his whole life to be good and no one wanted to come near him. He lived in the hope that he would go to heaven. But there was trouble waiting for him!

The saint was asked to return to his body for one hour and perform at least one bad deed in order to distribute it in paradise. When he returned, the saint thought. He never thought about anything bad, so at first he didn’t know what to do. Then he remembered that the widow who lived nearby always looked at him with a loving eye.

He would never have approached her because it was something bad. But he liked her. He decided to spend that hour with her. At the end of their meeting, the widow said that he had done a really good thing for her.

What do you think of yourself? Are you a good person?
