Eckhart Tolle: the Magic of yielding

For some people the concept of yielding can have a negative meaning, embodying the idea of defeat, of surrender, failed attempts to meet the challenges of life, falls into a lethargy, etc. However, an assignment does not like it. It is not necessary that you should passively tolerate a situation in which it appeared, and it's nothing to do. It also does not mean that we should cease to plan or proceed to positive action. A remise is a simple but profound wisdom to surrender to the flow of life instead of resisting it. The only place where you can feel the flow of life, — this is the moment, therefore, to surrender, to give in means to accept the moment without any conditions or reservations.

This means to relinquish inner resistance to what is. The internal resistance of the language of mental judgment and emotional negativity says “no” to what “is”. It becomes literally a Declaration, especially when things “go bad”, which in itself demonstrates the gap between the categorical requirements or peremptory expectations of your mind on the one hand and what actually is. The gap is period pain. If you live long enough, you know that quite often it is when things “go wrong”. And if you really want to remove from my life the pain and sorrow, it is to practice yielding to it in these, especially in these circumstances. Accepting what is, immediately brings you freedom from identification with the mind and thus restores your connection with Things. Resistance is the mind.

A remise is a purely internal phenomenon. But this does not mean that you can not take anything at all from outside or can not change the surrounding situation. In fact, all you need to do when you lose a situation is to take a single thin segment called the present moment, and not the whole situation. For example, if you're stuck somewhere in the mud, you don't say, “Well, I obey the one that stuck in the mud”. Submission is not yielding. You don't have to accept an undesirable or unpleasant life situation. You don't have to cheat and convince yourself like that you're stuck in the mud, there is nothing wrong. No. You entirely can realize your desire to get out of it. Then you narrow attention and direct it for the moment and concentrate on him, and in any case not hang on any mental shortcuts. This means that you will not have any judgment about the present moment. So you won't have resistance and emotional negativity. You just accept the fact that this point “is”. Then you take decisive action and do everything in your power to get out of the mud. Such action I call positive. It is much more effective than negative actions born of anger, despair or frustration. You continue to practice yielding until, until you reach the desired result, and refrain from hanging on the moment any labels. Let me give you a visual analogy as an illustration of the meaning I invest in it. Here you go a night on a footpath surrounded by dense fog. But you have a powerful flashlight that pierces the fog with your light ahead of you and creates a narrow and clean space. The fog is your life situation, including past and future; the flashlight is your conscious presence; the clear space is present.

Non-assignment makes your psychological form, the shell of the ego is stronger, and thus gives you a strong sense of separation. You begin to perceive the world, and especially people as a threat. You increases an unconscious need to destroy others through judgment, as well as the need to compete and dominate. Even nature becomes your enemy and your perceptions and interpretations of the commands and manages fear. The mental disease that we call paranoia is only a slightly more acute form of this normal but highly dysfunctional state of consciousness. Due to the presence of resistance to the hard and rigid is not only your psychological condition but after him and a physical form that is your body. In different parts there is a voltage, and the body as a whole is shrinking. Free circulation of vital energy it is much more difficult and this circulation is itself essentially important for its healthy functioning. Exercise and some physiotherapy can help to revive its circulation, however, until you do the assignment the practice of his daily life, these measures will only lead to a temporary withdrawal symptom, and it will continue as long as the reasons for this, that is, patterns of resistance will not be dissolved. There's something in you that is never affected by the passing and transient circumstances that shape your life situation, and the way to access this is only one — and it is through yielding. This is your life, your very Being, which is eternally in the timeless realm of the present. Finding this life is “the only thing we”, as Jesus said. <...> I want to ask you, and why you chose the word “assignment” to “surrender” and not “surrender” as it is usually interpreted? To me “Surrender” sounds more global, irrevocably, as the surrender of the (resist — surrendered), and in “yielding” is there some kind of echo of the gentle incompleteness. I only write about his observation, perhaps it just shows my not-change. I have nothing against the “surrender”. For many, it is “surrender” and works. However, for me, “surrender” has also such as shades of forced, violence, resistance, and it does not matter from where they emanate, imposed from outside or cultivate within.

I have this "surrender" is not inspiring. It leads to a quiet inner anger. Causes the desire of revenge, revenge. If to speak about “surrender”, then only about a total, deep and cleansing, like fire, which burns without residue all, what else would regret.

Yielding, I believe, is the result of awareness, informed decision, sincere forgiveness, as a sign of inner strength. Yielding is calm. The complete lack of resistance. A remise is a force emanating from within. Assignment is the unity, the connectedness. Yielding is calm.
