This girl has grown into a spectacular beauty, but there is one "but". She sleeps 22 hours a day!
The fate of the "sleeping beauty" Beth Goodier is very unusual. Website He is eager to share his story with the reader. 22-year-old British Beth Goodier has a rare disease – Kleine-Lewin syndrome. It is characterized by periodic episodes of excessive sleepiness: patients sleep most of the day (up to 18 hours, and sometimes longer), waking up only to eat and go to the toilet. In November 2011, Beth fell asleep for six months.
In a good way, by now Beth had already graduated from university and began to work in the specialty “child psychologist”. Possessing well-developed communication skills and rich knowledge in her field, Beth was confident that she would have a bright future. But on the eve of her 17th birthday, in November 2011, Beth suddenly fell into a strange state: for six months, she slept 22 hours a day, waking up only for a couple of hours a day to go to the toilet and eat some food.
Over the past 5 years, Beth's mother, Janine, has estimated that her daughter has slept 75% of the time. Now the 22-year-old is one of more than a hundred British women suffering from a rare disease, Kleine-Lewin syndrome, also known as “sleeping beauty syndrome”. But the reality, alas, is very far from a fairy tale, because young people risk literally sleeping through perhaps the most important time in their lives. It is known that the syndrome affects mainly adolescents under the age of 16, destroying the hopes of young people to successfully pass exams, enter higher education institutions and build a career.
Beth’s life is now experiencing another episode of “deep sleep,” and nothing – no medication, no loud noise, no pleas and pleas – can wake her up. Therefore, her life is spent mainly in pajamas on the couch. On rare occasions, when she needs to get a doctor’s appointment, Beth leaves her home in Stockport, Cheshire, but has to get around in a wheelchair because she is too tired to walk on her own.
All Janine, the girl’s mother, can do is wait for her daughter’s activity switch to click in her head. “It is like day and night. Tomorrow, for example, Beth can wake up and start this race again to catch up with the time spent sleeping. When this happens, Beth wants to quickly meet with friends and go to the hairdresser to do a new hairstyle, said Janine.
One of the few people who really cares about Beth is her boyfriend Dan, who is 25 years old and an elementary school teacher. Beth and Dan met three years ago during the wakefulness phase. “He often comes to us and sits at the head of the bed for a long time, talking to her and waiting for the girl he loves to finally come back. When Beth wakes up, they work hard to repair the relationship. He's a good guy, Janine says.
Usually, Beth has no more than two weeks to live a normal life, then the syndrome pulls her back into her tenacious paws. Every time Beth wakes up, I pray that the last episode of deep sleep will be the last. But then some time passes, and I begin to notice Beth's voice getting quieter, as she tries to avoid light and noise. Then I know she'll be asleep again soon. My heart breaks every time, Janine shared her sadness.
