The turbine, producing energy in irrigation canals

Moving water masses contain a lot of kinetic energy that can be used to produce electricity. Modern technologies allow to create a wide variety of designs of water turbines that convert it into current. So, a young company from Seattle "Hydrovolts" introduced a new hydropower technology as a renewable source of energy will use the energy of water flows, as from irrigation canals and other minor canals.

The hydrodynamic device from Hydrovolts is placed directly on the concrete bottom of the canal. It can also be placed in spillways, sewage treatment plants and other places with a free flow of water. The amount of energy received from the turbine depends on the speed through the water. According to the company website, the water flowing at a speed of 1 m/s will produce 0,4 kW of electricity; a flow of 2 m/s will give you the ability to generate 4 kW; and water having a flow velocity of 4 m/s will allow to obtain as much as 32 kW. It's not very high, but one such turbine is placed in an irrigation ditch, will be able to provide energy to several homes and recoup the cost over 5 years.

Turbine efficiency depends on the type of water source. If this is the channel where most flow can pass through it, the efficiency can reach 60%, and if it is more open and broad channel, where the entire water flow passes through the turbine, the efficiency will remain at the level of 15-30%.

"Large regions of the world use irrigation from constructed channels," says Burt Hamner, founder and CEO of Hydrovolts. "We found a way to produce a little energy from them without any impact on the environment".

Bureau of reclamation, the United States, which owns and manages thousands of kilometers of canals, March 8, 2012 established the prototype of the turbine in the Roza Canal in Washington, which is part of a system that provides water from the river, Yakima 136 000 hectares of land Washington. This installation is part of a plan that 500 channels will be used to generate energy that will reduce the use of fossil fuels, which is now used for pumping water. The pilot project allowed us to obtain from one channel or 8 kW of energy.

Also, the Bureau plans to test a new technology before the turbine will be widely used to be sure that they do not affect the speed of water flow, nor on its quality.

The company Hydrovolts expects that over time its devices will be installed in all channels of the world. It is expected that these turbines will be on the market in the next couple of years, and their initial cost will be about $ 20,000. published
