Cheese energy: a new powerhouse in the French Alps

At the power plant in Albertville, Department of Savoie, the intermediate product Beaufort cheese, fat-free whey, is converted into biogas — a mixture of methane and carbon dioxide. For the formation of gas in the serum add special bacteria. The selected gas is used to generate electricity which is then sold to the local energy company EDF. In the process of cheese production remains Beaufort serum and cream. The cream used for the production of ricotta cheese, butter and protein powder, which is used as a food additive.

"Serum — our fuel," says François Decker of company Valio, which designed and built the plant. It is reported that the new plant will produce up to 2800000 kilowatts-hours per year. This is enough to provide electricity to 1,500 people. This is not the first station that generates energy from cheese, but one of the biggest. The first prototype appeared 10 years ago. Since then opened about 20 stations smaller in France and other European countries. Now it is planned to expand the network construction of the stations in Italy. published
