In June 1985, on the cover of National Geographic published a photograph of unknown 13 year old girl from Afghanistan.
The comments stated that the photo was taken in a refugee camp in Nasir Bagh (Nasir Bagh), Pakistan, where the girl came after the death of their loved ones. Her family made its way through the mountains to the camp, but the road was spotted by Soviet helicopters and came under fire. Photo by Steve Makkyuri (Steve McCurry).



Steve Makkyuri constantly asked to comment on a trip to Pakistan and the photo of the girl. His most famous statement: "This portrait for me to connect wounds girl, her fate, even the whole situation in which a person is forced to pull up stakes and live in a poor refugee camp, hundreds of miles from his home ...ยป

In addition, Steve constantly asked about the future of, life, location of girls. And all these years he tried to find it again. Many times he returned to Afghanistan and Pakistan in order to find her character, but traces of it were lost. Finally, with great difficulty, "celebrity" was found - not far from his native village near the Pakistani border. Through a long chain of relatives and friends, it was found that the image on the photo beauty lives in the remote province of Afghanistan Tora Bora with her husband and three daughters.

To get to her village, you need three days' journey. The expedition went there and finally found a green-eyed stranger. Her name is Sharbat. She never learned to read, but is able to write his name. She knew nothing about how famous was her face, and how many articles written about her merciless eyes. She certainly remembered how her photographs of the white man. More she never photographed. About a year after that, she began to wear the veil. Steve Makkyuri photographed her again. First her in the long women's apparel - cloak, and then asked her to raise her veil. Sharbat with the permission of her husband raised her burqa and also looked sternly at the camera. And then told reporters that she and her family lived well under the Taliban - is better than under the bombing. That she would like her children to learn to read. And she survived because it was the will of God.

March 9, 2003 in the broadcast channel MSNBC a documentary film, completely dedicated to a single theme: the search for an unknown Afghan girl whose face has long been a symbol of this country in the West.
