On the night of July 23, the Russian occupiers shelled the historical center of Odessa, destroying the Transfiguration Cathedral.

Spaso-Transfiguration Cathedral And the historic center of Odessa was under a missile attack by Russia. For a whole week, the enemy terrorizes the glorious port city and literally destroys it. What does the Russian Federation want?

Instagram / @libkos If you watch a couple of videos of well-known Russian propagandists, the hair turns on end. They say that Odessa can be erased from the face of the Earth, and then capture and rebuild the city. These people seem to have nothing sacred. The destruction of cultural sites only confirms this. But what is the fate of the cathedral?

Spaso-Transfiguration Cathedral Spaso-Transfiguration Cathedral - the largest Orthodox church of Odessa, whose history began at the end of the XVIII century. In 1936, the building was destroyed by order of the Soviet authorities. And after almost 90 years, the main successor of the USSR, Russia, again destroyed the cathedral.

The enemy troops do not admit their guilt. Russian news is already reporting that Ukraine is to blame. But this charm of the Russian Federation turns up literally every time it hits civilian objects with its missiles.

It is interesting that the UOC of the Moscow Patriarchate, which keeps trying to keep neutral, this time recognized Russian terror: “The Russian rocket hit the central altar, as a result of which the cathedral building was partially destroyed, the ceiling of three lower floors was blocked, internal decorations and icons were significantly damaged, the office premises of the lower part of the cathedral were completely destroyed.”

When the rocket hit the cathedral, a fire immediately began. Although rescuers quickly arrived at the scene, it was clear that nothing could be saved. From under the rubble got Kasperovskaya icon of the Mother of God. She is the patroness of Odessa. As a result of the shelling, a security guard of the Transfiguration Cathedral was injured. Fortunately, he's alive.

What happens to the cathedral next? The cathedral was already rebuilt once. However, the construction took about 6 years. This is a serious time, considering how many buildings of different colors have been destroyed in Ukraine today. It is difficult to imagine how long it will take to restore all cultural monuments and houses. It is not yet clear how serious the scale of the destruction in the Odessa church is.

Instagram / @libkos Of course, for parishioners this event was a real shock. All social networks have already managed to fly a photo of a priest who kneels in front of the cathedral, holding on to his destroyed building. When the Holy Place is encroached, what could be worse for believers?

This cathedral has a complicated history. More than 20 years passed before the original building turned into a truly luxurious temple. The project was developed by Italian architect Giovanni Frapolli. He worked in Odessa for many years and put his hand in creating a huge number of buildings.

In 1837, Odessa became the diocesan center of the Kherson diocese. And this meant that the Transfiguration Cathedral needed to be expanded. It was then that he received the status of a cathedral. A few years later, the reconstruction of the temple began.

Of course, for all these improvements and repairs, local authorities spent an incredible amount of money. For example, 220,000 rubles were spent on the reconstruction of 1900-1903. But the end result exceeded all imaginable expectations.

Instagram / @zelenskiy_official As a result, the Transfiguration Cathedral became one of the main church buildings of the Russian Empire. The temple accommodated up to 9,000 people. Its dimensions in plan were 90 × 45 meters, and the height of the bell tower was 72 meters.

The cathedral and the USSR were closed in 1932. And after 4 years, the Soviet authorities ordered to destroy the temple. All valuables were taken out of it. Where they are now remains a mystery. To destroy this place was not so easy, because it was built very cleverly. Therefore, it was decided to blow up the bell tower so that it fell on the temple itself.

Reconstruction of the cathedral began only in 1999, when Ukraine had already gained independence. It took a lot of money – 32 million hryvnias were spent on all project work. At the same time, not a single penny went from budget funds - all the expenses were taken by patrons.

Instagram / @zelenskiy_official Today on Wikipedia you can read: "On the night of July 23, 2023, the cathedral was seriously damaged by a missile attack by Russian troops." If we close our eyes to the censorship that is permeated by Wikipedia, we should simply say: The cathedral is gone. This was again the fault of Russia.

How many cultural sites and monuments will the Russian Federation destroy?
