What about the newest icebreaker "Arctic", urgently sent for repairs

The Soviet Union became the first and only power in the world to create a fleet of nuclear-powered icebreakers. After its collapse, nuclear-powered ships for the needs of the national economy were produced only in Russia. A total of 11 ships were launched, 6 of which are still in service. These are the Northern Sea Route (1988), Taimyr (1989), Vaigach (1990), Yamal (1993), 50 Years of Victory (2007) and the Arctic icebreaker, the newest and most powerful in the world.



The Arctic Icebreaker The Arktika nuclear icebreaker is a project 22220 lead vessel built at the Baltic Shipyard. Its laying ceremony took place in November 2013. The icebreaker was launched in June 2016 and put into operation on October 21, 2020.

Unfortunately, during mooring tests, the Arktika received damage to the right propeller electric motor. Because of this, it was commissioned with a limited capacity of up to 50 mW (design capacity is 60 mW).

At the same time, the new flagship of the ice fleet managed to prove itself with one faulty engine. In October last year, the newest icebreaker made the transition from St. Petersburg to Murmansk in 21 days. Along the way, an exit to the North Pole point was made and successful work in severe ice conditions was demonstrated.

However, repairing the damage was still necessary. And on August 12, 2021, the Arktika stood for repairs in the docks of the Kronstadt Marine Plant. Within a month, the plant specialists successfully replaced the engine. And in November, the nuclear icebreaker will go to the place of registration in Murmansk.

Nuclear icebreakers of Project 22220 are the largest and most powerful in the world. Their purpose is to ensure year-round navigation on the Northern Sea Route. The length of the "Arctic" and its - 173.3 meters, width - 34 meters, displacement - 33.5 thousand tons. Four more vessels from this line are under construction. In different degrees of readiness are icebreakers "Siberia", "Ural", "Yakutia" and "Chukotka".
