This man needs no introduction. So much good was done by his hands, so many lives were saved. All the articles in the world are not enough to tell about everything he did for medicine and for each of his patients in particular. For more than half a century he has been helping children, and it will be useful to remember all that he has achieved in his life.

Leonid Roshal: Of course, he is a very extraordinary man, a man who made himself. At the dawn of his career, being the chief pediatric pulmonologist of the Moscow region, he proved himself as a brilliant pediatric surgeon, said Nikolai Vaganov, the chief doctor of the RDKB.

A brilliant surgeon is only a small part of what Dr. Roshal combines. He created a special surgical team, which was the first to be in the areas of natural disasters, man-made disasters and terrorist attacks. He proved himself not only as an excellent doctor, but also as an organizer and even a public figure.





Journalists named him. "Children's Doctor of Peace."And that's the best definition. He's never focused on one doctor's job. At the same time, he treats children and solves absolutely unchildish problems: he fights against paid medicine, fights against the shortcomings of the health care system, negotiates with terrorists. He makes every effort to development of the health system And it does more than the people directly responsible for it.





One of Dr. Roshal’s greatest achievements is the creation of Moscow Institute of Emergency Pediatric Surgery and Traumatology. He invested a lot of effort in its creation: for a long time he fought with various financial business structures and won a place for the construction of this institution. But everything succeeded, and in 2003 Roshal headed the institute, which is now developing advanced technologies, using high-tech methods of diagnosis and treatment of children, developing neurosurgery.

Alexander Chuchalin, MD and academician of RAMS, said: I think his institute is the only institute in our country that specializes in children’s neurotrauma. He created a whole school, he created an entire institute that meets the highest international standards.” Not everyone gets such words from respected people, which means that Leonid Roshal really deserves them.





It is worth mentioning his work to save children in different parts of the world. He has repeatedly led teams of doctors working in war zones in the Middle East, Yugoslavia, Abkhazia and Azerbaijan, Israel and Chechnya, treated children who suffered from earthquakes in Armenia, Egypt and Japan, Georgia and Sakhalin, California and India, Afghanistan and Turkey.





Of course, it is impossible not to remember the courage of Leonid Mikhailovich, which he showed during the rescue of hostages during the terrorist attack on Dubrovka. Everyone was shocked by the tragedy that happened there. She did not leave Roshal indifferent.

Like everyone else, Nord-Ost came as a complete surprise to me. In the evening I turned on the TV and at first I just didn’t believe what I heard. I sat at the screen until morning trying to figure it out. Then I thought: there are adults and children. They need a doctor.

He went there solely to help the hostages, to provide them with medical care, and as a result, 8 children were removed from the building, and the hostages received water and medicine. He negotiated with the terrorists and each time he fearlessly returned there to help with something else.

Every time you look at it, you get tears when you look at it. And from the injustice and absurdity of what is happening, and from the sincerity and true heroism of this man.

In an interview, Roshal recalled, “In this mess, 130 out of 800 people died.” I'm not saying it's not enough. But most of them survived. Every year, on the day of memory of the victims of Nord-Ost, I come to Dubrovka from early morning, long before the rally. I bring flowers and, like an idiot, I read over and over this list of 130 names. I think I could be 131st in it.





For his services, Leonid Roshal received many awards. Among them are “National Hero”, “Dove of Peace” and many others. He has a large number of titles, but the main one is the standard of a Russian doctor. And those are not empty words! Everyone should approach their anniversaries with such achievements behind their shoulders. At 84, the doctor is still working and will not stop until he can.

“I am 80 years old, time is ticking. I have to choose the main thing, although compared to 10 or 20 years ago, the number of plans and desires has not decreased. I really want to be of service to our Institute of Emergency Pediatric Surgery. But most of all, and these are not beautiful words, I want to see in Russia such healthcare, which would be quite a majority of Russians, says Leonid Mikhailovich.





This doctor dedicated his life to saving others. Thanks to his dedication and courage, hundreds and even thousands of children were able to escape a terrible fate. He was not stopped by fear of death, war, danger, or terrorists. Different parts of the world, different people and different lives. He has done so much, risking his own life, to change the world, even if not all, but only a small part of it.
