It's time: The Best Years of Life for Health, Mind, Happiness and Sex

“The most valuable time is youth”, “In 40 years, life just begins”, “Old age is not joy”, “60 is the new 30”. Which of these aphorisms seem true to you? Some sound very optimistic, but no matter how much we take comfort in them, no one wants to grow old. Is that a bad thing? Is it true that as we age, we have fewer benefits?

To find out, BBC Future journalists turned to science and found themselves ... pleasantly surprised by the medical research data.

Physical endurance

The peak age for activity that requires short and sharp bursts of energy (for example, a hundred meters, pushing the core, throwing a spear) is 20-25 years. There is already a rapid decline later. For the same reason, the short-lived professional age of footballers.

But age is not such a hindrance for grueling long distances, for example, for marathons of 100 and even 1000 kilometers. The decline begins only after 40 years and occurs smoothly. So if you keep yourself in shape, then in 70 years you can participate in triathlon (cycling, running and swimming)!

Brain activity

At first glance, the picture is not so rosy. After 20 years, memory is not the same as before. The ability to remember large amounts of information begins to decline after school. Working memory (the ability to hold the pieces of information necessary to solve short-term problems) lasts longer, but also gradually weakens after 40 years.

Creativity peaks at 40 years old, with most Nobel Prize-winning discoveries made by scientists around this age. Finally, after 50 begins to decrease the volume of white matter in the brain, which plays an important role in the learning process. Eventually, the brain as a whole slows down.

However, it’s not all that bad when you look at the next paragraph.

Knowledge

Let it become a little more difficult to remember, but something else improves with age. For example, at age 50, we are much better at understanding what we read and making arithmetic calculations than in our youth. Then we can boast of the general level of accumulated knowledge, which at this age reaches its peak.

Also with age comes the ability to understand people and the best way to build relationships with them. In short, our thinking abilities alternate with waves: one passes and another comes. There is no age at which a person is at his best on all sides. Each pore has its advantages.

Even when your sexual activity declines, something more valuable appears.

Life satisfaction

Contrary to the stereotype that the most vivid sexual adventures we experience only in early youth, real research shows that truly high-quality sex and sharp feelings become available later.

In addition, sexual desire, as well as activity, begin to decline only after 50-55 years, and then not immediately. A healthy man can count on at least another 15 years of regular sex life, a woman - for more than 10 years.

And most importantly. When your libido reaches zero in your 70s, your passion for life increases paradoxically. Maybe it's because after so many years of struggle and fuss, we finally find the perfect balance.

20 hard truths of life that no one wants to admit

The Elixir of Youth.

It turns out that every age can be happy in its own way, and this is good. But what's particularly inspiring is being able to keep your best abilities longer. Physical activity, for example, strengthens not only health, but also weakening memory. It also prolongs sex life for at least 5 years. So in this sense, a healthy lifestyle is a real elixir of youth!
