Effective water filter improvised
If, having pitched the tent on the shore of the lake, you suddenly discovered that not stocked with drinking water — do not despair. There is a simple solution: cut off a branch from the nearest pine tree, peel it from the bark, and use a branch instead of a filter, slowly flowing through it lake water. Homemade filter will stop any bacteria.
Scientists from mit have found that such filtration system can produce up to four liters of drinking water per day. This is enough to relieve the thirst of the average person. In a paper published in PLoS ONE, the researchers demonstrated that a small piece of sapwood effectively filters out over 99% of bacteria E. coli from water. The size of the pores in sapwood, composed of xylem, in which the entire length of the tree is transported juices, also helps to block the majority of known bacteria.
Study co-author Professor Rohit Karnik noted that the sapwood is a promising, cheap and effective material for water filtration, especially in rural communities lacking more advanced filtration systems. "Membrane of modern filters contain nanopores, which for obvious reasons in the garage can't do," said Karnik. "But nothing to make and is not necessary: nature already took care of it. Enough to take a pine branch and make it a filter.“
