Scientists potatoes contributes to weight gain
A new study from the University of California at Davis and the Illinois Institute of technology says that people can eat potatoes and lose weight.
The lead author, Britt Burton-Freeman: "Some people have questioned the role of potatoes in the mode of losing weight, because I accept vegetable as foods with a high glycemic index. However, the results of this study confirm what experts in the field of health and nutrition experts are saying for many years: it is not about eliminating certain foods or groups, but rather about reducing calories".
During the experiments, ninety men and women with excess weight were randomized into three groups: reduced calorie / high GI, low calorie / low GI, control group with no constraints. All participants were provided potatoes, healthy recipes and instructions to consume 5-7 servings of potatoes per week. At the end of the 12-week study period, the researchers found that the participants in all three groups lost weight and there was no significant difference in weight loss between people.
Burton-Freeman: "there is No evidence that potatoes, when it is produced as element of a healthy diet, contributes to weight gain. In fact, we see that it can be part of the program to reduce weight".
The results of the study are good news for potato lovers and any man who prefers healthy food options. One medium size potato contains just 110 calories, 620 g of potassium, more than a banana, provides almost half the daily value of vitamin C (45%), and contains no fat, sodium or cholesterol.
