A new study by specialists of the Institute for global food security at Queen's University (Belfast) showed that in popular rice products for children too high concentration of arsenic.

Proposed new recommendations of the EU place a limit 200 parts of arsenic per billion parts for adults and just 100 ppb for children and babies.

The study of rice products showed that the original puffed rice Kallo Foods have 323 parts of arsenic per billion and Organix wholegrain rice – 268 parts per billion, that is 168 per cent above recommended levels for babies and children.

Rice cakes Boots revealed the presence of 162 parts per billion, and cereal made with whole grain with a banana from Organix – 142 parts of arsenic. Baby rice Heinz company had an index of 129, which is 28.9 percent higher than recommended for children levels.

Scientists noticed that if a small amount of inorganic arsenic is not harmful, high levels over a long period can lead to cancer or heart disease.

Professor Andrew Meharg said: "the European Union is going to set standards for arsenic levels in baby rice at 100 parts per billion. In my estimation, this figure is too high. It should be at least halved. The limits are set so as not to disrupt the rice trade rather than reduce the risk to human health".
