What we are saying when we say “Thank God”?

For the modern secular (if not anti-religious) consciousness phrases like “thank God”, “Lord, have mercy”, “God forbid” and even “love”, is not reduced to words-parasites without a value, introductory designs, the employees of connected speech, etc.

Permanente progressing from the end of the middle Ages, the secularization of European languages and culture is not only and not so much a loss of faith in the transcendental power as convert their selves in power immanent — signs of speaking a single life (though not “God” already) the world, existing now in everyday speech as a kind of mini-prayers, existential markers of belonging and psychological comfort of the new European entity-agnostic. But this substitution is not innocuous.

First of all these words is not so easy to replace with the similar. For example, in the right place jokingly say “glory to Allah” or “Allahu Akbar”, but “praise be to Dionysus”, will dare not everyone. It is usually refer to the linguistic tradition, not involving alleged deliberate repetition of religious rituals and ancient magic cults. In this logic by default accepted the premise in the form of a linguistic theory à la Saussure — arbitrary language Zanchini, but even more teologiczna than reject it onomatopoetically hypothesis.

Perhaps consciously to g-d here and not go, but because it is the predominant manifestation of the unconscious. Therefore, recourse to the Divine name in everyday speech is a de facto magical practice, oznacava appeal or appeal to the sacred transcendent to assist, support or approval of their actions, albeit in a purely profane dimension, without any floors metaphysical and religious connotations of redemption, of salvation.

Not coincidentally institutionally believers forbid the profane use of sacred words “in vain”.

We refer to God in the most innocuous contexts, when it would only “ as good” or “cool” with joy and showing approval of what is happening, and in the extreme, when we are baptized before takeoff and landing aircraft, being neither sleep nor the spirit of Christians, or during sex, when ejaculation comes also secretly consecrated by the tradition of the violent birth and death.

But to say “God” during sex — it's like saying “in short” during a conversation with friends, anticipating another boring and long rant. There is nothing cute. It's just a misappropriation of the qualities that you never possess or attempt to manipulate a partner with similar prejudices and fears.

Turning to God in ordinary communicative situations, we just don't want to be beholden to another, and to society for all the benefits that they provide to us, i.e. don't want to give symbolic for their debts, not individual success and achievement, therefore, appeal to the universal love and hatred, the guarantor of our loneliness and aggressive lawyer of justified violence.

By the way, quasilinearly, pseudoceratina language revs I weaned the girl, the angelic form which only enhances the beauty of her free Dionysian consciousness. Now, if your friends, to mental health which you are indifferent, you say “thank God”, simply ask them: “thank who?” As the arm lift. published
