How to develop adequacy: 10 most effective exercises

What I value most about people is their sense of humor. If a man can make me laugh, that's half the success. It’s not just that I like to laugh. And the fact that a witty person (not to confuse wit and wit) is very special brain. Such a person thinks both systematically and flexibly. He has a special optics - he sees what others do not see. It's like they're making a different movie. To me, wit is the highest expression of the mind.

I don't know how to develop wit. Learning jokes by heart is definitely useless. They say the KVNs have their own techniques for writing jokes, something like combining the absurd. I think the pinnacle of this technology is ComedyClub. It's funny, but it's already predictable.

Another high manifestation of the mind is its independence, criticality. In a word, I call this adequacy. The ability to look at yourself and the world as objectively as possible.

And this is how to develop adequacy, I know. The most general recommendation was once made by Bernard Shaw. He said that The reason for his success is that he thinks every day, whereas many think only once a week.

So, 10 specific exercises:

1. Write.

Write notes on important books, films, interviews. Even the conversations you found important, convex. Better yet, write critical articles. Remember, in school, “What the author wanted to say and what I think about it.”

The first diary of K.I. Chukovsky begins with the words: “Read yesterday Baratynsky.” I disagree.” He was 17 at the time. And Korney Ivanovich is not only the author of Moidodyr, but also a translator and an amazing literary critic.

Find a companion who is ready to read, watch and discuss with you. This is especially important if your spouse becomes such a person. Discussions are likely to turn into arguments, but that’s fine. In life, it is important to have a strong opponent.

2. Find your opponent.

A strong opponent develops very well if you know how to argue. A.A. Lyubishchev had a whole code of conduct of the dispute. He believed that an argument can be ended when you understand all the arguments of the opponent, you can present them with the same persuasiveness and passion, but then you can clearly infer where the mistake was made. This habit is very developmental.

3. Read books.

Couldn't find an interlocutor? Search among the books. I highly recommend such genre as diaries and correspondence. Diaries of K.I. Chukovsky, Catherine the Great, A.P. Chekhov ... The advantage of diaries is that in them you see the author’s inner dispute, the path he has traveled in his reflections, while in published works you deal with the result.

4. Get used to being critical of everything

Mathematicians say that if an error is made in a decision, it will often be hidden behind the phrase “obviously...”. There is a risk of becoming a critic and a person “a Baba Yaga against”. To avoid this, be critical and silent. Over time, you will feel the measure. And the habit of analyzing will remain. Every time you come across a surprise, pleasant or unpleasant, you will be wondering what you missed when such a surprise became possible.

5. Look at your social media feed.

All over again. Very few people create content at all and even fewer people create quality content. As a result, the feed of social networks litters the brain with low-grade news, humor and ratings. "There are no others, are there?" Don't read any of them.

6. Take care of your brain.

Take care of your eyes, ears and brain in general. From propaganda on television, from bloodthirsty news feeds, from Hollywood action movies. Speaking of cinema. Take a look at slow movies like Woody Allen. They have time to feel, think, enjoy. In films with an exciting plot, there is something about violence - quick sex, the purpose of which is to relieve tension. Such films are used as if to kill time. Your brain is grabbed and carried somewhere, and you pretend to be there. Slow movies gently lead you by the hand, let you look around to show you the beautiful.

7. Experiment.

Take a small step every day where you are not comfortable. Walk with a ball tied to a hat, buy nothing but food for 200 days, draw every day.

Start with the habit of reading less. Radical advice. The point is to stop consuming other people’s thoughts and start producing your own. Instead of looking for the answer in our head, we often start to Google it. And the brain is also an organ, as soon as it stops working, it begins to die.

Reading needs to be very selective too. Seneca compared indiscriminate reading with gluttony, when everything eaten can not be digested and goes straight to the toilet. “He who reads much becomes a fool.” Recommendations like “read 100 books a year” and “read books in notes” are controversial. There have always been few decent books. Marketing, for example, is really moving fast.

Social networks are barely 10 years old, and they have already happened two revolutionary rounds of development. However, in each new book really new information is not more than 10% and it is often reduced to successful examples, unexpected angles. Time invested in reading such books, it is wiser to invest in the development of your thinking, so that you can see good examples and look from an unexpected angle. And for reading, choose books with at least 30% new information.

8. Learn the laws of logic

There are only four of them and they are quite simple. You'd be surprised at the result. If it becomes interesting, study the main types of induction. Logic is not a panacea, but it can give a great impetus.

9. Travel.

In other countries, in their home country. Even traveling to the Omsk region, where I live, gave me no less than a trip to China, the United States or India. It's all about being able to travel - to look and see. Otherwise, it will turn out as in the cartoon: “Is this how cucumbers are salted?” No, it's not like that. You have cucumbers and we have cucumbers.

10. Always learning

Take time at least once a week for oratory courses, Italian, art history, lectures on how to understand classical music and driving courses like a New York cop. Just learn constantly new and different. This, by the way, will prevent Alzheimer's disease.

100% adequacy is unattainable. It's very easy to verify. If we look at ourselves and around us with 100% adequacy, there will be no surprises, neither good nor bad. However, anyone can be surprised. Some are simpler, some are more difficult.

Adequacy is permeability. A basic quality from the presence or absence of which all others follow. A man can hardly be cruel if he is adequate. Conversely, if he is stupid, he cannot be adequate.

Witness, by the way, is also a consequence of adequacy. published
