Turmeric save from liver cirrhosis
Curcumin is one of the main constituents of the Indian spice turmeric, apparently able to fight with liver damage leading to cirrhosis. This is indicated by the data preliminary experimental studies published in the journal Gut.
Curcumin, which gives turmeric its bright yellow color, has long been used in Indian popular medicine for the treatment of a wide range of gastrointestinal disorders. Previous studies have shown that it has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that can help fight disease.
A group of researchers tried to find out if curcumin could delay or prevent the damage caused by progressive inflammatory liver diseases, including primary sclerosing cholangitis and primary biliary cirrhosis. Both of these diseases may be caused by genetic defects or autoimmune disease that causes damage to liver tissue and eventually causes cirrhosis
The study was conducted in mice with chronic liver inflammation. During the 8 weeks in their diet added curcumin. In the control group mice had the same diet except curcumin. At the end of the period of the experiment, scientists compared the health status of the mice in both groups.
The mice who consumed all the time curcumin significantly improved liver health. Now experts are planning to continue the study with the participation of volunteers from the patients. According to the authors of the study, curcumin is a natural product that can be a very promising way to treat inflammation of the liver in the future.
