Ghost towns in Italy

Everybody has heard of Pompeii, but few people know that the ghost towns in Italy, much more. Moreover, they have also been abandoned by the locals because of the volcanic eruption or other natural disasters.

The first ghost town - Romalyano al Monte. Rather the village in Salerno, which the inhabitants fled during the earthquake in 1980. According to statistics, the city at the time lived 3000 people. Balestrino - another ghost town, but with a long history. He was abandoned even in XIX-th century. The year 1887 was listed as the last year, when there untouched by the last resident. Now its territory banned visits by tourists, but reconstruction can be completed soon.







Bussana Vecchia has a sad story. In the same year, as in Balestrino, earthquake claimed the lives of about two thousand people. In the middle of the last century it began settling here illegally. Officials are still trying in vain to evict the settlers, most of whom are artists and representatives of other creative professions.





In southern Italy, in Calabria, the latter is a ghost town in our material - Pentedatilo. The city was founded by the Greeks as early as 640 BC. In 1793, the city was abandoned because of a massive earthquake. Only in the middle of the last century, it has been allocated funds for its restoration. Now here's annual film festival.
