Already in 1779, Suvorov filed for divorce. The reason was the suspicion of infidelity. However, despite the desire to dissolve the marriage, the commander was powerless before public opinion, which was on the side of Varvara Ivanovna. Alexander Vasilyevich was forced to suspend the process due to constant pressure from relatives of his wife and the upper class.
In 1784, Suvorov broke off relations with his wife, who at that time was carrying a child. Perfectly aware that Arkady was not his son, Alexander Suvorov did not recognize the child. This lasted until Catherine II herself in old age personally asked to recognize the boy as a sign of gratitude.

Such a huge pressure on the commander was due to the great influence of the wife’s family. And the topic of divorce was not particularly encouraged in secular society. In the opinion of most, it is much easier and even better to just have romances on the side. But Suvorov did not recognize this way of life. He believed there was no room for infidelity in marriage. And rather than tolerate this attitude, it is better not to be married at all. But on this warfield, he was alone.

After the complete rupture of relations, Suvorov undertook to pay his wife 1200 rubles a year. But Varvara Ivanovna, with her love for a luxurious life and the presence of debts, this money was not enough. Taking advantage of good relations with Paul I and his discontent with her husband, she achieved an annual payment of 8000 rubles. In addition, it also received at its disposal the Moscow house of Suvorov. However, Alexander Vasilyevich refused to pay her previous debts.
In 1800, Varvara Ivanovna was widowed. Alexander I came to power, who on the day of his coronation granted her the title of state lady and the Order of St. John. Catherine. Thus, the unfaithful wife, even as a widow, continued to enjoy the merits of Suvorov. However, this lasted only until 1806, when Varvara Ivanovna Suvorova died.

Life Wisdom: What does this story teach us? One can ask for a long time whether Alexander Suvorov was right or wrong in society. The commander, despite all his services to the Fatherland, was not part of the higher secular society and did not support its ideals. Who knows, if he had accepted his fate, his marriage would not have been so unsuccessful.
