Perhaps 90 years ago, the ointment was effective against certain types of bacteria, but the effectiveness of the ointment against new, mutated strains of microorganisms is questionable. Most likely, they have long adapted and the ointment does not harm them. Moreover, according to some reports, prolonged use of the ointment increases the risk of skin cancer and leukemia.
