Grandma in a silk blouse is nostalgic for gifts on March 8, Soviet times
Over the past 50 years, much has changed in our world: traditions, living standards, relationships and expectations. When I congratulated my grandmother on International Women’s Day this year, I wanted to ask a lot of questions. For example, how they celebrated. March 8 in the USSR And what they got as a gift. I will tell you that I was touched to the core.
On March 8, it is no secret that Modern ladies are quite capricious in terms of gifts.. One bouquet of flowers is not enough, and pans with pots, they say, hint at the true place of a woman. Many are waiting for at least jewelry, the latest iPhone or a trip to the Maldives.

When my family and I were visiting my grandmother, who is almost 95 years old, I said, “Grandma, what did Grandpa give you on March 8th?” Granny paused a little, thought, and then went to the old sideboard and took out a large crystal dish.
For her, it's not just dishes, but memory. She still uses dishes, but only on big holidays, because it is such a value. “From Moscow I brought ...,” recalls the grandmother. “It was expensive, I was a little angry that I spent so much money. But it was still a pleasure. It was the most expensive gift I ever received from him.
And for modern ladies dishes - it is already offensive, disrespectful ... Previously, few people could afford such things. Even a banal postcard was a very valuable gift. By the way, my grandmother also carefully stores postcards. Every single one. He likes to review them, reread warm words and remember those who are no longer around.
I wonder, what are we going to review? Social media posts? It's getting sad. It seems to be technological progress, we live better, give each other expensive gifts. But at the same time, a little bit. We forget about true values.. We became spoiled, we are no longer surprised. Little things do not particularly please us, modest gifts are perceived as stinginess. Love is measured in material things.
Of course, it is great when you can present a good, high-quality gift to a dear person. But much more valuable is understanding, respect and support, which can not be bought anywhere. If in the USSR there was a shortage of food, clothing, furniture and equipment, now it seems that lack of sincerity and kindness. There are so many things that we lose ourselves in them.
© Freepik I asked my grandmother another question: What would you like to receive as a gift on March 8 in the USSR? ? Grandma thought again, delved into the memories. And then she said, "We never dreamed of anything like that." Except that the family was always healthy, fed and dressed. And keep them close.
GettyImages I remembered another phrase I heard from my grandmother, who was very hooked: “How good is life now... It is so good that people no longer know what they want.” There is so much truth in those words.
In today’s capitalist world, money can buy a lot. We have the choice and the means. We go overboard, constantly looking for the best. I just really want that, chasing promotions, discounts and the latest models of phones, we do not forget that How important it is to appreciate every moment spent with loved ones. And enjoy the little things.
