“He was a great man. He and I had a ritual. I told him, "You're a genius." He said, “Repeat it again.” And it was repeated all the time. I told him several times that it is very important for a person to say that he is a genius. After death, everyone will say, “He is great.” He was unique not only on stage but also in life. He joked at every turn. Every reprise in his life was like a pop. He was alive, cheerful, beautiful. An amazing man with a difficult fate, says Gordon.

Gordon also remembered another interesting story about Mikhail Zhvanetsky. The journalist has never told anyone about this before. The events of this story occurred after Gordon took another interview with the writer. The story happened in Odessa, where Zhvanetsky lived.

After the interview, Dmitri Gordon: I’ll tell you one more thing, I never told anyone. I invite Mikhail Mikhailovich for an interview, he practically did not give an interview. He lived in Odessa for 4 months a year. I said, “Mikhail Mikhailovich, fly from Odessa to Kiev, we’ll do it in the studio.” He says, "All right." And before that, I have an interview with Mikhail Zadornov. And I say: “Today we had an outstanding writer Mikhail Zadornov visiting.” And I ask Zhvanetsky: “Have you seen the interview with Zadornov?” He says, “I didn’t see why we were competitors, why I would be upset.” At the end of the interview, I said, “Today we had an outstanding writer Mikhail Zhvanetsky.”

“After that, we gave a lot of vodka at the restaurant. We're on our way to the airport and we've got more cognac. He lies half in his chair and says: Here is an interview with Zadornov, which I did not watch, you said at the end that he is an outstanding writer, and at the end of the interview with me, you said too. I don't care, of course, but if my mom lived, she'd like you to call me great, but I don't care. However, there are still people in Odessa who care about this. If you rewrote the ending and said I was great, they would be pleased. The next day he calls me and says, “That’s what we said yesterday about the ending, don’t, it’s okay and so,” Gordon recalls nostalgically.
