Scientists of Tyumen State University (Tyumen State University) will create a “drift island” that will absorb pollutants in water bodies, including heavy metals, with the help of special plants. This was reported on Thursday in the press service of the university.
“TyumSU is developing technologies for eco-purification of water bodies. As part of the project, it is planned to create a “drift island” that will absorb pollutants directly from the water column thanks to specially selected plants. The project received support from the federal program “UMNIK”, – stated in the message.
According to graduate student of the Institute of Biology of Tyumen State University Sergey Artemenko, the technology involves the restoration of the natural stability of the reservoir, which will reduce the cost of maintaining reservoirs of recreational and fisheries value, as well as their restoration after man-made pollution. This approach has a number of significant advantages over traditional cleaning methods. In particular, it will allow to deal with a wide range of pollutants from heavy metals to organic compounds, he said. The region has also prepared a plan of events dedicated to the Year of Ecology. A total of 66 different projects are planned. Among them is the construction of a number of facilities, including waste processing plants in the cities of Tyumen, Tobolsk, Yalutorovsk and Ishim, an electric gas turbine station of the Yuzhno-Nyrym oil field, which will reduce emissions into the atmosphere from the combustion of associated petroleum gas.
In total, 96 specially protected natural areas of regional significance and two federal nature reserves with a total area of about 900 thousand hectares have been established in the Tyumen region. There is also a wetland of international importance "Lake Tobolo-Ishim forest-steppe".
