Itching and pain may be precursors of skin cancer
A group of specialists led by Jill Josipovic, head of the Department of Dermatology of the School of Medicine at Temple University, USA, came to the conclusion that itching and painful sensations with skin damage may be precursors of non-melanoma skin cancer.
Every year in the United States alone, about 2 million patients with non-melanoma malignancies of the skin are registered. And itching and pain can serve as symptoms that signal the presence of skin cancer in a patient.
Proper assessment of the presence and severity of these symptoms can greatly help in the diagnosis of skin diseases. The data from this study should encourage dermatologists and other specialists to use the itching and pain intensity scale in their clinical practice.
