Boundary through space

Often from space you can easily see the state border between countries that adhere to different vectors of economic development.

From low-Earth orbit, it seems that an invisible and, to some extent, virtual line makes one area a lifeless desert, and the other a flowering garden. A striking example is the space image presented below. On the left is a country with a commodity economy; on the right is a country experiencing rapid economic development.
