As shown by a new study, Botox injections may provide effective treatment of gastric cancer.

An international team of scientists found that components of Botox, anti-aging wrinkles, slow down the tumor growth by blocking nerve signals that stimulate cancer stem cells.

A researcher from Columbia University Timothy Wang: "Scientists have long observed that human and mouse a lot of nerves around the tumor cells. We wanted to understand the role of nerves in the initiation and growth of cancer, by focusing on stomach cancer. During the experiments it was found that blocking the nerve signals makes the cancer cells more vulnerable — it's going one of the key factors that regulate their growth."

Botox releases the neurotransmitter, the chemical signal acetylcholine. In cosmetic procedures, acetylcholine reduces wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing facial muscles. Co-author Duan Chen (Norwegian University of science and technology) said: "anti-Cancer effects were remarkable, especially with local vagotomy or by injecting Botox. The results actually surprised us. The fact that Botox is highly effective was particularly exciting. We believe that this is a good treatment because it can be used locally and be appointed for cancer stem cells. Botox can be injected through gastroscopy and it requires that the patient remained in the hospital for only a few hours."

Botox injections is less toxic than most standard cancer treatments do not cause any side effects and relatively cheap.
