Copenhagen Wheel with autonomous power for bicycles comes to market
In 2009, a team of engineers from the SENSEable City group, formed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, presented their first prototype of the Copenhagen Wheel device.
This device is a self-contained rear bicycle wheel that is mounted on a regular bike, instantly turning it into an electric vehicle.
A commercial version of the Copenhagen Wheel is now available to consumers for pre-order.
The development of this original wheel was organized by the mayor of Copenhagen, hence the name of the device. Serial production of the device is currently established in the company Superpedestrian, consisting of members of the group SENSEable City.
The principle of operation of the Copenhagen wheel is as follows. The on-board electronics of the device detects when the cyclist has difficulty pedaling, and starts an electric motor that drives the rear wheel of the bike.
Thus, if a cyclist climbs uphill, the electric rear wheel motor helps him to move with less effort. Well, on a flat road, the rear wheel turns as usual - it is driven by pedals.
What power the rear electric drive needs a cyclist (ie at what speeds to include on the electric motor), is determined by the cyclist himself, using the application on the smartphone. The app also allows him to track his cycling statistics, including distance traveled and the number of calories burned.
In addition, the app automatically blocks the Copenhagen Wheel if it detects that the owner with the smartphone has left the range of a Bluetooth headset installed on a parked bicycle.
The company offers a choice of devices with a lithium-ion battery, the capacity of which is enough for 48 kilometers, an electric motor with a capacity of 250 or 350 watts, thanks to which the wheel is able to reach a maximum speed of 32 km / h. The Copenhagen Wheel weighs 5.5 kg and is available in sizes of 26 inches and 27 inches.
The battery life is extended by the use of regenerative braking energy. The battery is removable, so you can just take it out of the wheel and put it on charge.
The price for pre-ordering the Copenhagen Wheel is $699. As expected, the first deliveries of the device on sale will begin at the end of the first quarter of next year.
P.S. And remember, just by changing your consciousness – together we change the world!
