Solar Impulse 2 has broken three records

A trip around the world only on solar energy in reality is more than just a trip with stopovers, the Solar Impulse 2 team basically guessed. The plane on solar energy began its journey from Abu Dhabi in March, but currently have to stay in Hawaii until the beginning of August.

While Swiss pilot and Solar Impulse co-founder Andre Borschberg (Andre Borschberg) has experienced a record five-day flight from Nagoya, Japan to Oahu with minimal time for sleep, the battery of the aircraft still need to rest.

On this segment of their journey of the solar plane has broken three records: the longest distance covered 4480 miles (7.209 km), and duration in solar aviation – 117 hours, 52 minutes and record of the longest control of the aircraft single pilot. He reached a height of 8 634 m and a cruising speed of 61.19 km / h.

After checking the plane in Hawaii, the Solar Impulse team now reports that the parts of the battery is irreversibly damaged, so they require repair and replacement, which will delay the aircraft on the ground, at least for the next 2-3 weeks.

Redundant isolation of the batteries caused them to overheat during takeoff on the first day on the leg from Japan to Hawaii. The team said that during the flight closely followed this situation, and there was no way to reduce the temperature during the record flight, which required daily highs at 28,000 ft (8 534 meters) for reasons of power management.

And until the plane is repaired, the team says it will seek ways for a more effective process of heating and cooling during long flights.

After the Solar Impulse 2 is ready to return to air travel to continue until the US, where planned a few stops before setting course for the Atlantic and ultimately back to Abu Dhabi. published
