A new method of cleaning waste water picks up CO2 from the air

All people use the toilet and, for example, in the United States each year in waste vodopady about 12 trillion gallons of waste. It's a dirty process which leaves a massive carbon footprint. Treatment of industrial wastewater – purification from sewage plants and power plants require more energy.

A new method for the processing of sewage can run on its own waste while simultaneously recovering the carbon dioxide from the air. As a bonus it also produces renewable fuel for cars hydrogen fuel cells.

Treatment method known as microbial electrolytic method of capture of CO2(Microbial Electrolytic Carbon Capture), purifies waste water environmentally friendly method using an electrochemical reaction that absorbs more CO2 than it creates, it produces a renewable source of energy.

"It's three bonuses in one system," said Z. Jason Ren (Z. Jason Ren), associate Professor of engineering at the University of Colorado at boulder, who helped to design the new method.

The system functions with the help of bacteria that can release hydrogen from water. "They actually convert the chemical energy of waste water into electricity, to split water," he explains.

The process creates hydrogen gas, which can be used as fuel or as environmentally friendly source of electricity. When water splits, it also connects with the calcium to create the calcium hydroxide that can capture CO2 from the air and turn it into limestone, which can be used for construction.

It is such system that would work well in a coal-fired power plants as large volumes of wastewater, and carbon emissions. "Power plants have received new instructions from the President, they should reduce CO2 emissions, and this is what we can help," says Ren.

"In fact, this is the perfect place," he says. "Entrepreneurs have to spend a lot of money to clean up wastewater, they have a lot of money to clean up their solid waste". Ren cites the example of Duke Energy, the company that was fined over a hundred million dollars for leaking coal ash in a local river. They also need to spend a lot of money to raise CO2 emissions. Thus, our method will help them to cope with all these tasks at the same time".

Currently, the system is still undergoing study to confirm the mechanism of action, but the researchers have already addressed the major utility companies, which are interested in using this technology. "Of course, there are some technological problems that we must overcome," said Ren. "How much will this system and how effectively it will work — those issues on which we work". published
