Work hybrid aircrafts entrust graphene supercapacitors

The French company Flying Whales, which develops hybrid aircraft LCA60T, intends to equip it with graphene supercapacitors. The development of the German company engaged in supercapacitors Skeleton Technologies. It is assumed that the supercapacitors will assume the peak load at an elevated energy consumption.

According to calculations Flying Whales, the steady-state power consumption of electric motors of hybrid aircraft and onboard systems will be about 1, 5 MW. At peak load, for example, when the engines to the limit, electric double layer capacitors provide an additional two megawatts of power.

It is expected that the use of graphene supercapacitors will reduce the number of batteries on board LCA60T. At the same time completely replace the battery electric double layer capacitors is not planned, because the latter have a relatively small capacity and are not capable of long-term gradual easing.

It is expected that graphene supercapacitors will withstand more than one million of charge-discharge cycles. Further details on the development of Skeleton Technologies, specializing in the production of commercial supercapacitors, are still unknown. The hybrid vehicle will be used for transportation. Its load capacity will be about 60 tonnes.

Ionistor is an electrochemical device with organic and inorganic electrolytes. Functionally, it is a hybrid capacitor and chemical current source. Electric double layer capacitors have a large energy density compared with conventional batteries and maintain high instantaneous discharge and charge currents.
