The perception of another person is much more dependent on his accent than by appearance

It found psychologists from Jena Schiller University (Germany). Accent is more important than appearance - a key finding of the study Dr. Tamara Rakic (Tamara Rakic).

Previously it was thought that visual information plays a major role in the ethnic category to which we assign a stranger. The role of language, to be precise - the accent, has long been underestimated. Unfounded, as shown by the Jena study.

Psychologists offered the participants of the experiment photos of people "typical Germans" and "typical Italian" with written texts - the statements of these people. The task was to correctly identify the ethnic type; and solving it, study participants have relied on text and image. Then, instead of written statements of the participants of the experiment proposed a record - speech patterns for particular people. At the same time some of the "Germans" with pictures spoke standard German and the other - with a slight Italian accent, as well as all the experimental "Italians».

The results were quite different: now allocating people to "ethnic types", the participants were guided almost exclusively by their accent. The face image of a man who played an important role, is analyzed their written statements, practically ceased to affect anything, as soon as the participants have at their disposal records sounding speech. Rakic, which specializes in the field of conflict and co-operation between different social groups, believes that in this way proved the key role of language in the definition of an ethnic type of person, as well as the importance of literary language (without an accent) as an important instrument of social integration.
