May 1942. During fierce fighting, the second German army captures the Kerch Peninsula. The defending troops of the Crimean Front forced to evacuate to the Taman Peninsula, but part of the troops, to cover the retreat, and the crossing of the main forces, was cut off and was forced to go underground. Thus began a heroic 170-day defense of the adzhimushkay quarry.





The exact number of people, then descended into the ground, now can not tell nobody. Often you can find the numbers in the 10-15 thousand, at least - 25-30.



Quarries were not prepared to withstand long siege. There were no stocks of food, medicine, weapons and ammunition, and the wells were just outside. Created double teams, and at night, while some lined up in a chain, to carry water, the second divert enemy fire and taking it over.



But the really short of water people began to feel after the Germans, without thinking twice, started to poison all her sources nearby, throwing their dead bodies of men and horses.



In this regard, the detachment was created so-called "suckling", whose tasks include the collection of water by sucking (!) With its wet walls and ceilings. Typically, one shift is such a worker collecting flask full of water. Priority is naturally given to the wounded and children.



The situation was critical, but the spirit of the underground garrison was not broken. They began to look for new solutions. On the advice of the locals who had joined the army, work began on the construction of wells in the quarries themselves, which will soon come to fruition.



Rumors of these wells, and soon came to the Germans, and the case took the enemy sapper company. Launched a massive explosions quarries. As a result, the most powerful explosion crater which can be seen clearly even from a satellite under the rubble left over a thousand people.



Nevertheless, the underground garrison did not surrender. Then the course was put a new weapon - gas.
