Today, the 140-year anniversary of the birth of the great Russian wrestler Ivan Maksimovic Poddubny. By tradition, the festivities will begin with the laying of flowers at his grave.

Six-time world champion in the fight against the French, Poddubny and his family moved in Yeisk in 1927. Since that time, our city has been associated all his remaining life. He often traveled on tours and performances, helping young athletes.
November 19, 1939, he was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, he was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the RSFSR, and in 1945 - Honored Master of Sports.
8 August 1949 great fighter died. According to the decision of the City Council, he was buried in a suburban park, near the graves of airmen who died in the skies over Yeisk in the Great Patriotic War. At the grave stood fences with simple wooden sign. Over his grave courted students Yeisk school physical education teacher, who by order of the USSR Council of Ministers, signed by JV Stalin, was named I.M.Poddubnogo.
Known throughout the monument was unveiled much later - November 13, 1955. Its opening was attended by delegations of enterprises, institutions and educational institutions of the city, as well as numerous guests of honor: State Coach Greco-Roman wrestling (because in those days was called the French, and now the Greco-Roman wrestling) A.Senatorov, champions of the Soviet Union and world classic Stashkevich fight, Nikolaev, student Poddubny Alexander Mazur, Vice-Chairman of the Committee for Physical Culture and Sport RFSR Zahavin and delegation fighters champions of Krasnodar Territory.

The first memorial service was held here October 8, 1968 on the day of the 97th anniversary of the birth Poddubny. At this time on the road in our town are the artists of the Moscow Circus №14 headed by its director, a famous circus trainer, Mstislav Zapashny.

Circus artists paid tribute to the "Champion of Champions" and laid flowers on his grave.
