At the beginning of the XX century Sergei Mikhailovich conceived an ambitious project: to capture in color photographs of his day Russia, its culture, history and modernization. Prokudin-Gorsky in May 1909 had an audience with the Emperor Nicholas II, who commissioned him to photograph all sorts of aspects of life in all areas, then made up the Russian Empire.
