To avoid cutting your hands, wear gloves. Cover the cutting board with film or paper. So it absorbs less persistent fish smell. It is easiest to clean the fish while it is fresh and wet. So get to work without delay.

But if the fish is already lying down, dip it in boiling water or hold it in water with vinegar. Because of this, the scales will be separated easier. Then wash the carcass, cut off the fins and tail with scissors.

Don't let the fish slip out of your hands.
  1. Kitchen scissors
It is convenient to hold the fish by the tail with the teeth of kitchen scissors. So it will not slide in your hands, and the cleaning process will be more pleasant.

  2. Big salt.
Rub your hands with big salt. After that, the fish will not glide so much. But make sure that there are no wounds on the skin, otherwise you will be irritated.

  3. Pencil or sushi stick
A pencil is not a common item in the kitchen. But sushi sticks are also far from everyone. In any case, the work with the pencil goes faster. Put it in the fish's mouth to keep it comfortable.

How to clean fish from scales quickly and without splashing
  1. In the water.
Put the fish in the water bowl. Clean it “against the wool”, holding the tail directly in the water. So you will avoid the “fountain” of scales and the subsequent tedious cleaning.

  2. In the bag.
Put the fish in a transparent bag head down. This will allow you to see what to do, and not to dirty everything around. Take the fish by the tail and run the knife from tail to head. Clean your sides first, then your belly.
  3. Stocking
If you plan to cook minced fish, then you do not need skin. So you can peel the fish off the scales along with the skin. To facilitate the task, place the carcass in the freezer for a while.

Then make incisions on both sides along the dorsal fin. Pull out the fin. Cut the skin near the head. Grab the skin along with the scales, starting from the top of the back to the tail.

In conclusion, we recall that in some cases, scales can be left. For example, some people prefer to cook fish unpeeled. This preserves nutrients and aroma. However, on the other hand, the decoction in this case has to be additionally filtered from the remains of scales.
