Researchers from the American Duke University managed to cure squamous cell carcinoma in a laboratory hamster by introducing ethanol-based gel injections directly into the tumor. The study, published in Nature Science Reports, has enormous potential. After all, the idea is to create a publicly available therapy based on ethanol, a common and relatively cheap substance.





Why did scientists decide to use alcohol? Obviously, because the answers to the most difficult questions are often under our noses. It turns out that alcohol, when directly affected by the affected tissue, is able to destroy proteins and dehydrate cells, provoking their death.





A dose of 4 times the volume of the tumor helped to achieve a positive result in 4 out of 12 laboratory hamsters. However, scientists faced a problem: if the tumor did not have clear boundaries, ethanol simply spread, affecting neighboring healthy cells.

We solved it by mixing it up. ethyl alcohol. Such an improved drug when it enters the aqueous environment of the tumor turns into a stable gel. This protects healthy tissue from the harmful effects of injection. The last drug was the most effective: in 6 of 7 rodents, all tumors regressed after just a week.





All of this is great, of course, but is it applicable to human treatment? After all, studies were conducted on hamsters suffering from a rare tumor characteristic of animals, and a person has not yet been treated in this way.





Not everything that works at the cellular level or in laboratory animals is useful to humans. Nevertheless, the results are very encouraging. Alcohol treatment It can become popular in developing countries, as well as where there is a shortage of highly qualified health workers.





Varieties of malignant tumors are innumerable, and in each case, an individual approach is needed. This recent discovery is just one of a million steps scientists will have to take in the fight against deadly diseases. This is probably a step in the right direction.
