This is why every self-respecting person will never use plastic straws.

Every day we use and throw away dozens or even hundreds of different disposable items. Among them is such a thing as plastic straws for cocktails. But think for a second about the fact that every straw that has ever been produced exists somewhere...

Of course, plastic straws do not occupy the first lines in the ranking of all the garbage that enters the ocean every day, but they pose a considerable threat. Why?

Yes, because they are small and light, because of this, most often do not get into the garbage cans. And even if their number in the heap of ocean debris is not so significant, but it is because of the size they have turned into a deadly danger: the tubes get into the food of marine inhabitants.

There are no statistics for our country, but in America, 500 million plastic straws are used every day. Most of these straws are not recycled. They end up in landfills, get into rivers, seas and oceans. It is they and millions of disposable things that form a huge dust-spot In the middle of the Pacific.

Every year, more than 100,000 marine life suffers from plastic. You've probably seen a video in which zoologists rescue a turtle and pull a plastic tube out of its nose. And this is far from an isolated case. By 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than marine life. And you can change that. Save the planet.

Think about plastic straws, how great is the need for straws? You can almost always do without it. “10 years ago, straws were not widely used. They were only given out in bars. Now you order just a glass of iced water and they put a straw in the glass, says Douglas Woodring, founder of the Ocean Recovery Union, a Hong Kong-based group that cleans the ocean of debris.

With the exception of people with medical needs, everyone can consume drinks without using plastic straws. This is a good reason to stop using them. At home, plastic straws can be replaced with bamboo, glass or metal. They do not need to be thrown away after the first use and taken care of quite easily.

A great alternative to plastic straws are compostable straws that are made from resin derived from corn starch. They don't harm the environment.

If you can not do without using a straw in public cafes for hygiene reasons - carry a reusable straw with you.

How many plastic straws have you used in your entire life? Have you ever thought that maybe this particular straw was the cause of the death of some defenseless seafarer? It's quite possible. Isn't that an excuse the next time you're offered a straw in a cafe, just to give it up?
