What to do if you see a black dot on someone’s hand

On September 13, 2015, a post appeared on Facebook that immediately caught the attention of a large number of people. The photo showed a woman covering her mouth with her hand and staring fearfully at the camera. Her palm was turned outward to show a black dot painted on her.

Underneath the photo was a message: “A black dot is a sign that lets people know you’ve been a victim of domestic violence and can’t ask for help directly.”

In just 24 hours, more than 6,000 people learned about the black dot, and it helped 6 women. A few days later, the information spread across the Internet, and the black dot became an unspoken sign of those who need help.

However, despite the fact that this information has helped many people, emergency workers do not share the effectiveness of this idea. The fact is that this sign is not generally accepted, because it originated on the Internet. In addition, the idea attracts too much attention, and if you know about it, then your abuser may also be aware.

Police and social services advise not to risk posting such photos on social networks, and immediately call the rescue service, where you will be helped, regardless of what language you speak or whether you can speak at all at the moment.

But there is no denying that the black dot has helped and continues to help dozens of people around the world who are in a dangerous situation and unable to seek help. And even if rescuers have not heard of such a sign, it will clearly attract their attention, making it clear that something is wrong.

Therefore, if you suddenly see a person with a black dot on his hand, you should contact the police: perhaps this person needs help.
