Salt production in Ethiopia

Danakilia or Aparca depression (Danakil Depression) in Ethiopia lies 100 metres below sea level and is one of the hottest and most inhospitable places on Earth. Despite these difficult conditions, the Ethiopians continue the age old tradition of salt extraction from the ground manually, with the average temperature of 34.5 degrees Celsius, which rises to more than 50 degrees. Photographer Carl Court visited this hot place on 22-23 January and took some pictures.
