Australian trams switching to solar energy

Australian authorities plan to move Melbourne trams on electricity generated by solar power plants.

For the project in Northern Victoria will be built several large solar farms. Due to their energy are going to obtain about 75 MW of electricity, 50 percent of which will be focused on nutrition more than 400 trams in Melbourne. The first station will be built by the end of 2018

The project is part of a plan for the complete phase from the combustible fuel by 2050 and is funded by the Australian government.

For example, in Australia plan to close coal plants, one of them, of hazelwood in Gippsland, which produces nearly a quarter of all electricity in the state, preparing for the closing. It is projected that by 2025, the project will help the government to increase the target of renewable energy by 40 %.

The tram network in Melbourne was considered in the last two decades the largest in the world, with over 250 kilometers of track. They serve 536 cars running on 30 routes. Routes Melbourne tram numbers 6 and 96 are considered to be one of the busiest tram lines in the world. published
